Book: To Those Who Suffer – on sale

Edit: Sorry, this went back up to $11.69 within hours after I posted what’s below. It has good used prices (for now!). I thought maybe it was a decimal point error but probably not. It still looks like a great book. I’ve had it on my list for a long time and can’t remember where I first read about it. If it’s on my main list it was usually highly recommended. If you have read it and would like to comment, please do.

I have this on my list and happened to see that right now the paperback edition is $1.94. It has good reviews.

Can you report back when you’ve read it and let us know if it is worth $12?

  2. 2 Scripture Zealot

Sure but I think it will be a while. I have a few other books on suffering like Joni ET’s latest, Being Well when We’re I’ll and a few others including eBooks by Puritans. You should be able to get it used for $7-8.

The last one I read is one of my faves and a pleasant surprise Be Still, My Soul (25 Classic and Contemporary Readings on the Problem of Pain): Embracing God’s Purpose and Provision in Suffering

Jeff – Being Well When We’re Ill by Marva Dawn and To Those Who Suffer both sound great. I put them on my wishlist. Glad you mentioned them. Blessings, Eric

Glad to hear Eric. While I’m mentioning books– I’m sure you heard of Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. Very Reformed but good with a chapter by Joni ET. But you probably know that. Polishing God’s Monuments if you haven’t heard of it is very interesting, especially for those who suffer from Chronic fatigue and chemical, or any, sensitivities but also what the pastor/father writes is very good. I should write a list of what I’ve read but it’s kind of a big task.

Thanks for the recommendations, Jeff. I haven’t read Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. I usually tend to gravitate toward less reformed books, but it sounds great- esp. if Joni’s written a chapter ;) A favorite of mine is a When God Breaks Your Heart by Ed Underwood. In it he talks about his suffering with chronic leukemia and severe skin problems – also explores the passage about Mary, Martha and Lazarus and how Jesus responded. I listened to an audio version with Ed narrating. Very good. Eric

  6. 6 Scripture Zealot

Well Joni ET is Reformed so I guess you can’t get away from it. (smiley goes here). You may want to skip the first chapt of Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. It’s like a treatise on Calvinism.

I haven’t heard of that book and will look it up. It sounds good. Thanks.
    Jeff
