Quote of the Day: Out of Balance Love

Always strive to have an imbalance in your heart where the desire to love outdistances the desire to be loved: “This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another.” (1 John 3:11, 16)

–Ed Welch, Running Scared: Fear, Worry & the God of Rest

Philippians 2:3-4 NIV
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Thank God for Ed Welch. His book, “When people are big and God is small” really helped me. I mean, it helped me a lot!

    This is a great quote.

  2. 2 Scripture Zealot

I hadn’t heard of that one. Thanks for mentioning it.

  3. 3 John

Thanks for the quote. That’s something we all need to be reminded of fairly often.

  4. 4 Scripture Zealot

You’re welcome. I realized how horribly deficient I am in this area.

And we can do this knowing that Christ is the only one sufficient to fill our desire to be loved, and that it is by his Spirit that we can love others freely. Thanks for the reminder.

  6. 6 Scripture Zealot

You’re welcome. Sometimes I’m surprised that the simplest quotes get the most response. I suppose that’s what we need, but they can still be meat and deep truth.

That’s also a good reminder that we can strive but it’s Christ’s first love for us and his grace that fills and enables us.
