I plan on buying Bruce Waltke’s two volume commentary on Proverbs. Would anyone want to dissuade me from buying this and getting something else? I want something that’s very complete and won’t leave me wanting. I can’t afford any others in addition to this.

Michael Fox’s Anchor Bible volumes are superb, though I don’t know if I could say get one author and not the other because Walkte’s volumes are superb. I’ve skimmed Fox, but have read Walkte straight through.
Isn’t he a supporter of theistic evolution?
If so, that would disqualify it for me.
Thanks Mike.
Stan that’s a good point. We know people are rolling their eyes at us but Proverbs itself talks about creation. Even though it’s wisdom literature and poetry it’s still true. I’m going to give that some thought.

I noticed that Ligonier recommends Waltke too. I’ll look into it more.
Jeff
I believe I will go with Waltke. I don’t think I can let that one issue prevent me from getting what might possibly be the best in-depth commentary on Proverbs.
Fox’s Anchor Bible series would have philosophical problems of its own. Fox is from UW-Madison, Wisconsin where I went to school. This place is as liberal as anywhere, including Berkeley or any other place you want to name. He may be a rogue conservative, but the Anchor series is ecumenical. Fox may not even be a Christian, although again, this may still be one of the best commentaries on Proverbs. Given his resume, he may know the language and genre as well as anyone.
Two others would be NIVAC which is hit or miss. I love the one on Revelation by Keener and Luke is so-so. Another is Bridges from over a century ago which is supposed to be excellent.
There are shorter ones by Kidner, who’s very good, and Tremper Longman who isn’t sure if Adam and Eve were real individuals.
So back to Waltke:

Here at least he says he believes Adam and Eve are real people and that he doesn’t oppose those who disagree with him on evolution. So that’s why I think I’m going to go with my original choice. If it were the Gospel of John it would be different.

Hi Jeff!
I hope the back is getting better!
I tried to find a verse that might give you a little lift. And I know you have been studying the OT so I thought this might help:
Rom 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
I truly hope you get well!
Tomg
Thank you tom. That verse is indeed very encouraging.
Jeff
You have made a fine choice indeed, my friend.
Thank you Esteban.
