Judges in Judges

From the book Ryken’s Bible Handbook:

DID YOU KNOW?
The judges did not “judge.” They were charismatic military leaders whose chief function was to deliver the nation from its enemies. Various translations and commentators render the Hebrew word sophet as “heroes,” “leaders,” “chieftains,” “deliverers,” and “warrior rulers.”

Because some of the judges overlapped, no exact chronology is possible, but the period of the judges spanned approximately three hundred years.

Hmmm…is the same word translated “judges” in Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, the one used in the Book of Judges? I think they were probably both. They needed to be enforcers of the law as well as “interpreters”…such as Deborah…

I suppose I could look it up myself…but, it’s far easier to ask and let someone else do it…and then of course question the answer given…*: )

I certainly wouldn’t know. Maybe Mitchell would. All I know is what was stated in the quote. I don’t suppose it’s a major issue but think it’s interesting to know. But not interesting enough to really look it up as you say. So much to learn…
