Strangely I haven’t read any of Piper’s books except Suffering and the Sovereignty of God (he wrote one or two chapters and co-edited it I believe) but have listened to a lot of sermons and read a lot of articles. There are a couple I’d like to read. So much to read!
6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those who are bitterly distressed;
7 let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more.
(Pro 31:6-7 NET)
I’d say that one is way less popular. People get apoplectic when you show them the Bible advocating drunkenness in some circumstances.
Acts 17:26-27 (New International Version)
26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.
27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
I know the following view of suffering, is not a popular belief…and while it in no way relieves us of our responsibility to do good works, or to follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit in our heart to relieve suffering if and when we can…scripture clearly tells us that our wise and loving Heavenly Father who is ETERNITY MINDED, has in fact chosen our circumstances of life.
Because He loves us, He has set each one of us in the bounds, situation and time frame of history, in which we will most likely seek after Him…even if that entails suffering. Jesus suffered, and went to the cross, following the plan of His Father, because He was also ETERNITY MINDED. Hebrews 12:2
Does God want his children to suffer??? Not at all, but the reality is…in this life we will. John 16:3 Our Father in Heaven is omniscient and can see beyond our reality and present circumstances to His greater plan…that His children seek Him with all their heart…and find Him.

You Calvinist, you! Of course, I’m referring to Solomon.
I just started reading Piper’s book, Spectacular Sins. Wow, good stuff. This verse kind of fits with the theme.
Blessings,
Derek
I guess you can’t make a Judgement Day omelet without breaking a few bad eggs.
Yeah I heard Solomon was a Calvinist.
Never heard this verse in a sermon.

That doesn’t sound like a good omelet.

Yes I’d agree with that.
Something similar in Eccl about not suffering unnecessarily but I can’t remember where.

Yeah Nancy! Great comment.
