Quote of the Day: Being Mastered by the Word

D.A. Carson on theological education:

…as you study, you may suddenly without even realizing it shift from desiring to be to be mastered by the Word to desiring to be masters of the Word.

This is from an interview that can be found on Justin Taylor’s blog. The quote is at about the 15:30 mark.

    That is a great quote!!

Every time I sit down to study Scripture I say a prayer to help me stay focused on what God wants me to learn and see from the Word. It become easy for any of us to become enamored with what we think is our own ability to deduce what the Scriptures are saying. When in fact everything that is opened up to us is done so because God wants it to be!

Very nice explication of the quote. I try to remember to pray every time I read Scripture also. I think I need to expand on it a bit though.

Does he say that as a good thing, or as a warning?

  4. 4 Scripture Zealot

    It’s as a caution.

In that case, it’s a brilliant quote. :)

Yes indeed. Carson is a quote machine.

You’re welcome. It’s for me too. It should scare most all of us who are ‘serious students’ of one degree or another.

    Jeff, nice post.

This have happened to me. And man, was I glad when God showed me my own pride in how I was talking about scripture, and my mastering of it.

I’ve only been Christian for around 7 years, and before I was saved, I was a world champ in all things, seriously, I thought so. And after being saved, I realized, by the grace of God, my need to be more humble, but wow, this pride came quick again after I started to study theology and thought I knew about all that was to know.

Thank God he sees our heart, and he show us if we get full of pride, that is, if we have the time to listen to him. And boy, I am amazed by his grace and patience with me.

God is just amazing. My own knowledge will never take me all the way. His grace is enough for me.

Yeah if God didn’t do that we wouldn’t learn much or gain much wisdom. Studying the first four chapters of 1 Cor. knocked me down a few pegs.

Carson has a way of saying something simply that really hits it on the head. I can totally feel what he’s saying here. Thanks for the reminder.
