Since nobody commented on my post yesterday I thought I’d write another one with the translations.
Which one is ESV?
Mark 9:23
- NIV “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”
- NET Then Jesus said to him, “‘If you are able?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”
- ESV And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
- NLT “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
I came across this verse and noticed that the ESV is gender inclusive so I thought I would try and trick you.
I wish the ESV could make up their minds on gender translation.
Oh I guess I was too late on the previous one. I see that you gave the answers. I had chosen number 2. But that is a good example of why I have not warmed up to the NET bible. Oh well.
I mainly wanted to give some slight props to ESV for their gender inclusiveness here and try to fool you in addition. I was thinking some would think for sure that #1 would be ESV because of the gender.
Also, since I’m learning some “baby Greek” or more like in-the-womb Greek, I’m learning why translations are different and why there may be so many differences to the start of the verse and the punctuation chosen, not that I could explain exactly what’s going on.

The ESV in my comparison is also inclusive. I think the issue is a bit more complex than has been advertised… In the future I’ll probably post fewer options because I’ve had a hard time comparing so many verses in my post.

If read aloud, the NLT sounds most natural. I still like the NIV better than ESV in this case as it sounds more naural.
